Behind the scenes

For Justus Boyz' most recent photo shoot, Phil & Mike checked out a bunch of different locations with their long time photographer, Bruce Giffin. For this shoot two models were brought in from London, England -- Chris and Donnie. In addition to the guyz from across the pond The Boyz decided to enlist Ivan (from Chicago/Pennsylvania) and bring back model Mark Imasa from Michigan. The gang of guyz traveled to Metamora, Michigan for a 2-day photo shoot on a beautiful horse farm. The Horse Farm sat on rolling hills with lots of corals, stables, as well as a pumpkin patch that extended for what appeared to be miles (tens of thousands of pumpkins are harvested each year)! The occasional herd of deer running through made for a slightly dangerous shoot as it was the height of bow season.

The first day was bitter cold with a wicked wind that was rough for the guyz, but they were tough and there were no complaints. Early on in the first day, Mike made the brilliant move of backing into Bruce's camera stand and, in one of life's slow motion sequences, watched the camera crash onto the hardwood floor of the restored 1800's schoolhouse, pieces flying everywhere. Fortunately, the camera, with the help of some super glue, was functional the rest of the day until the last few shots when it finally caved and we had to move to a backup.

For the second day, Mike & Phil worked with Chris & Donnie - Mark and Ivan had other commitments - Ivan had to assist in a surgery. Yes, that's right. Ivan and the other guyz were not only good looking great guyz , but they were all talented and incredibly smart. With Chris and Donnie, we worked quite a bit with the horses on the farm. The incredible crew that helped make everything happen included Jose (a terrific artist who worked on the new designs), Travis, Trevor, Collin (Bruce's asst), Colleen, Mike (not Justus Boyz Mike, but the Horse Ranch dude, Mike), and Pasha (the horse trainer).

Chris, Donnie, Mark and Ivan were all awesome. They made it look easy, but in reality it really takes a lot of experience and hard work! Check out the attached link for some behind the scenes shots and extra photos. Enjoy!

PAIR HITS THE RIGHT NOTE WITH DESIGNER MEN'S UNDERWEAR
by Margarita Bauza from www.freep.com

freep articlePhil Elam and Mike Boila met as interns 20 years ago at MCA Records when they aspired to be in the music industry.

These days, the two are doing quite well, but they're marching to a different drummer -- men's underwear.

In 2003, Elam and Boila, who had been writing, producing and performing '80s electronic dance music under the name Justus Boyz, tried designing men's clothing.

They started with a line of sporty T-shirts, hats, headbands and wristbands under the same name. Last year, they debuted a men's underwear line.

"It spread like wildfire," said Elam, whose line of underwear was featured in an April New York Times article. The two just returned from Los Angeles, where they attended a screening of the film adaptation of the musical "Naked Boys Singing," which features their underwear.

Their timing couldn't have been better. From September 2004 to August 2007, sales of men's knit underwear rose from $2.35 billion to $2.5 billion, according to NPD Group Inc.

Elam, a veteran of the record industry, is not all that surprised that the underwear line took off. However, he was baffled by the cool reception he initially received in Michigan.

Local shops weren't interested in carrying their merchandise, he said.

Instead, he and his partner contracted distributors who sold the clothing line in London, Spain, Switzerland, France, South Africa and then California, New York and Florida. They also sold well on the Internet and in boutique retailers around the country.

Elam says local sales are picking up. BC Cabangbang, owner of ChoZen by BC, a Royal Oak gift and home store on Fourth Street, was one of the Elam's first customers.

Last year, Cabangbang debuted a swimwear and underwear line and began carrying Justus Boyz trunks and briefs.

"Women have Bravo and Victoria's Secret," said Cabangbang. "There really isn't a place that specializes in men's underwear and lounge wear. We don't carry Fruit of the Loom type of stuff. We carry designer lines."

"I'm out of every size," he said. "As soon as I put them on the mannequin, they began to sell. It's done very well, their price points were great. They're competing very well."

Elam won't disclose profits, but said he and Boila are getting by fine on the underwear line.

"Fashion underwear is just huge now," he said. "Our No. 1 response we get from everybody is that it's just so comfortable."

Behind the scenes

If you're ever in Cincinnati, you've got to check out the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. It's an awesome museum that focuses on the Underground Railroad and race relations in our history. One of it's many highlights is the cooperative effort that occurred across racial lines that help facilitate the migration of slaves to freedom from the south to the north. They also spotlight international slavery issues that exist today. They have a lot of great community based programs, including one we think is particularly awesome, the Freedom YP, which brings young professionals of different races together for social events and other stuff. They should create satellite programs in every major city!

Justus Boyz Make The New York Times

an inconvenient truth Check out The New York Times feature "But What If You Get Hit By A Taxi?" that recently ran on the front page of their Styles section. The article discusses the boom in the men's underwear market and how guys of all ages and backgrounds are trying out new styles down under. Justus Boyz (we're proud to say!) was prominently mentioned as one of the new brands guys are checking out.

You can find Justus Boyz gear at lots of sweet stores and websites like International Jock, Men's Secret (Switzerland), Bang (Australia), Com Thus (France), Guapo-Guapo (Spain), Puffta (UK), Outrageous-Apparel (UK), For Men Only (South Africa), Under U 4 Men (Portland, also mentioned in the article), Forever Friends (Detroit), Injeanious (San Francisco), Play Clothing Company (Nashville), Unique on Central (Pheonix), A Different Light Bookstore (West Hollywood), 10% (Los Angeles), Out Lines (Dallas), and many other locations.

hero at large

There aren't many people in this world that truly embody the word, "hero." Sure, there are those who risk their lives daily to protect us and fight for our freedoms. It would be wrong not to include their sacrifices in that definition. And, they are, in that sense, "heroes." But, as the old saying goes, "They have a dog in the fight." It is their jobs, and therefore their duty to help us, save us and keep us well. However, there are other types of heroes Who, in their own ways, not only help us, save us, and keep us well, but also who's actions illustrate what we could be, if we tried a little harder. One of those, "heroes" is Cindy Evans.

Cindy, like most single women, is a working mom who has to deal with everything that comes with the title. Her time is at a premium. Unlike most single working moms ( or dads), she has decided to open her already crammed schedule, to make room for something bigger than herself; the annual Breast Cancer 3 Day Walk

Neither she, nor anyone close to her has ever had breast cancer. Nonetheless, she will donate her time to organize a team, solicit donations, and train for the walk. She's not an athlete. This isn't an extension of an activity she normally does. When asked what prompted her to take on this challenge, she smiles and quickly offers an excited, "I saw the commercial and I had to do it."
